Touchplay in the Cornfields… more money then you think

Bevington, a small town with a population of 60 people, is located just south of Des Moines. It has a Kum And Go convenience store, one restaurant and six TouchPlay machines — making it in all likelihood the town with the most TouchPlay machines per capita.

It’s also gives an indication of the kind of money the machines generate.

More than $200,000 have been spent at TouchPlay machines in Bevington, including $34,000 at the town’s only restaurant — which just received their machines in January. [KCCI]

Just think of all the money these people are saving by not having to travel all the way to a casino in order to gamble on real slot machines. Instead they can stay within the comfort of city limits and play the six Touchplay machines. They’ve probably conserved at least 34,000 worth of gasoline alone!

Illegal Immigrants, Arrested and Face Deportation?

Please more of this…

DES MOINES, Iowa — Federal immigration authorities said Friday that four gang members were arrested in Des Moines and Marshalltown in a two-week nationwide operation that led to 375 arrests.

Twin brothers Noe and Nahum Hernandez-Angeles were arrested Wednesday in Marshalltown, and Jonathan Romaniz-Reyez was arrested in Des Moines.

Federal authorities said all three men are illegal immigrants from Mexico with previous criminal convictions. The men face deportation.

Our government needs to release more information to the press about these arrest and future arrests of illegals. Hopefully it sends a message.

The Walmart/Blogger Issue

My good blogger friend, Brian from Iowa Voice has found himself on the otherside of the NYTimes. He was interviewed in an article about receiving emails from someone within Walmart’s PR division. I don’t know the specifics and I would like to keep it that way.

The question that I’m begging for an answer on is How did the NYTimes get tipped that Walmart PR people were sending articles and links to bloggers? Did some disgruntled blogger happen to contact the NYTimes press room? And why did the NYTimes decide to spend their time following that lead and in turn publishing an article? Wait a sec… it seems the NYTimes did the SAME exact thing they are accusing Brian of doing…

Calling all Glenn Beck Insiders

The Glenn Beck Insiders voted by a very slim margin to hold the first ever National Insider Convention in New York City. The Insiders will run wild in the streets of New York and will converge for personal tours of Glenn’s new studios in Radio City Music Hall, a luncheon with Glenn with a Q&A session.

Or.. what we hope happens :)

Calling all Citizens of Chocolate Town

Your mayor wants everyone to come back and vote for him in the next election. If you no longer live in New Orleans and are not planning to come back please vote via absentee ballot.

HOUSTON (Reuters) – In a sign of the times for his storm-stricken city, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin campaigned for re-election on Saturday — in Houston. Nagin is one of 23 candidates in one of the more unusual mayoral elections in U.S. history because most of the voters now live in other cities.

I’m guessing that Nagin finally realized that all of his supporters left for higher ground. (excuse the unfortunate pun)

Glennpedia article on Newsforge

Everyone looky, I was interviewed by Tina Gasperson for the Newsforge.com article entitled, Average Joe makes a Wiki.

Joe Brooks is your average 23-year-old capitalist and sick freak (a.k.a., fan of conservative radio talk show host Glenn Beck). He’s not a geek, but he believes free software is a “great way to create software that the average Joe can use.” Brooks proved that point recently, after becoming disgruntled with Wikipedia administrators who kept reverting posts made by Brooks and other Beck fans at the popular community encyclopedia Web site. Brooks, an open source neophyte, downloaded Mediawiki software, configured it, and started his own site called Glennpedia.

I Need A Gimmick

Every entertainer, broadcaster, blogger, or person needs a gimmick.

A gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. Product gimmicks are sometimes considered mere novelties, and not really that relevant to the product’s functioning, even earning negative connotations. However, some seemingly trivial gimmicks of the past have evolved into useful, permanent features. Finding a successful gimmick for an otherwise mundane product is often an important part of the marketing process. (Wikipedia Article on Gimmicks)

I’m searching for a characteristic or mannerism that I do that I can incorporate into my blogging style for my own gimmick. It needs to be interesting, unique, and light-hearted. For instance, I could create a catchphrase or an ongoing gag-phrase that I use in every single post. Running gags are among the most successful and entertaining comedic styling that would fit perfectly in Half the Politics. I could start on a hard-hitting topic and then Half way through shift the post about another unrelated topic. Would that be a good gimmick to have or would it get distracting?

Who knows? I might have this huge post going about how social security reform is the crucial to the survival of our society and the post might end with me describing my day at work. Speaking of which one of my co-workers, who shall be renamed Marlena loves going to Missouri every weekend. She told me that its her "hillbilly" activity, meaning that she and her boyfriend camp out and fish and do hillbilly things. Sidebar: Even though I’m from Iowa that doesn’t mean I live in the country. When she said fish I needed her to explain what fishing was. I can just imagine Marlena jumping into a phone booth alone the Iowa-Missouri border and come out with overalls and pig tails.

Perhaps I just found my own gimmick!

Touchplay or Not to Touchplay

One of the headline stories coming out of Iowa is the controversy about the Touchplay machines that the Iowa Lottery has installed into gas stations, grocery stores, and bars. These machines look, feel, and sound exactly like their slot machine counterparts except for the fact that every play is predetermined. This is a loophole that the Iowa Lottery used in order to get the machines installed.

The Touchplay Machine

I’m not even sure why the Touchplay machines are a controversy. They are nothing more than an interactive scratch ticket or a pull tab. Sure, there are going to be those who waste their money in attemp to win the top prize, which by the way is less than a scratch ticket at 1,000. People get addicted to everything! Are we going to stop selling Little Debbie treats and Mr. Pibb because they are addictive? No. If you want to play then you should be able to play.

Des Moines Register: The issue has been a primary focus for the Legislature since it convened in January. Some lawmakers say it’s become a distraction from more important issues.

‘‘I’m just surprised that with all the issues out there, like education … that this is taking up so much of our time,’’ said Rep. Wayne Ford, D-Des Moines.

Thank you Rep. Wayne Ford from Des Moines. At least somebody gets it!
